Parenting a Tween: What Is Changing at Ages 8 to 12

About the Tween Years

The tween years, roughly ages 8 to 12, can be an awkward and challenging time for a child as they navigate growing independence along with physical, emotional, and social changes. For parents, this stage can be rewarding and also challenging, and at times frustrating.

Many parents find themselves asking: Is my child a little kid, a big kid, a bit of both, or 12 going on 30? What do they need from me? How can I support my child while taking care of myself?

From Our "Talking Tweens" Talk

In June 2020, PPG presented "Talking Tweens," a live webinar sponsored by Northern Westchester Hospital Center for Healthy Living. The first half of the talk laid out the developmental theories of this stage, along with the biological and social factors behind some of these changes. The second half was a Q&A on the particular challenges parents were facing with their tweens. The talk also touched on how COVID and confinement affected this age group, and on strategies for supporting children during that time.

Support for Tweens and Their Parents

Parents of tweens often find it helpful to connect with others at the same stage. Our support group for parents of tweens is one place to do that. Therapy can also help, for a child, for a parent, or for the family together.
