Art therapy is a form of therapy that invites people to express themselves through drawing, painting, sculpting, and other creative processes. It offers another way to communicate for people who find it hard to put emotions and experiences into words. At Psychology Partners Group, we offer individual and group art therapy for children, teens, and adults. Individual art therapy is available at our Chappaqua and Hartsdale offices, and our groups meet in Chappaqua.

Art Therapy for Adults

Sometimes talk therapy can only take us so far. Art therapy gives adults another way to explore internal conflicts and look at long-standing patterns from a new perspective. No artistic skill is required. It can be used on its own or alongside traditional therapy to support people working through trauma, anxiety, and other concerns.

How Art Therapy Helps

The creative process can support therapy in several ways.

Non-Verbal Exploration

Creating art lets people explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences without relying on words. This can help when trauma or anxiety makes verbal expression difficult.

Self-Discovery

Art therapy offers a safe space for self-exploration. Through the creative process, clients may notice feelings they have kept out of view and better understand their behavior.

Stress Relief

Making art can be calming and meditative, which may help reduce stress and support relaxation. Its repetitive elements can encourage mindfulness.

Emotional Well-Being

A creative outlet for complex emotions can support emotional well-being. Creating and reflecting on artwork can also bring a sense of accomplishment.

Personal Growth

Art therapy helps clients visualize their inner world and work through unresolved issues in a creative, constructive way.

Connection with Others

In group settings, making art alongside others can ease isolation and build connection.

FAQ

Common questions

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy in which people express themselves through drawing, painting, sculpting, and other creative processes, guided by a trained art therapist. It offers another way to communicate for people who find it hard to put emotions and experiences into words.

Do I need to be good at art?

No. Art therapy does not require artistic skill. The focus is on the process of creating and what it brings up, not on the finished artwork.

How is art therapy different from talk therapy?

Talk therapy relies mainly on conversation. Art therapy adds creative expression, which can help when words are hard to find. It can be used on its own or alongside traditional therapy.

Who is art therapy for?

We offer art therapy for children, teens, and adults, individually and in groups. Our Art and Play Therapy program serves children, and our groups are designed for specific ages and concerns, which you can find on this page.

How much does art therapy cost, and can I use insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider for all plans except Northwell Direct and can submit claims on behalf of clients so they can be reimbursed by their insurance. The amount depends on your plan, so we encourage you to check your out-of-network benefits. Our team can answer questions about fees when you contact us.

What if I need urgent help?

PPG provides outpatient care and is not an emergency service. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any time. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
