How Parent-Led Programs Work

Children spend most of their time at home, and the way a family responds to anxiety or difficult behavior can ease it or, without anyone meaning to, keep it going. SPACE and Parent Management Training give parents specific, research-based tools to change those patterns. You are not being blamed for your child’s difficulties. You are being given the skills and support to help.

Our Programs

SPACE

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is a parent-based program for children and teens with anxiety or OCD. Parents learn to offer support and confidence while gradually reducing accommodation, the ways the family adapts to avoid or ease anxiety. Your child does not need to attend sessions.

Parent Management Training (PMT)

A skills-based program for challenging behavior, including ADHD-related behavior, defiance, and aggression. Parents learn to give clear instructions, use positive attention and rewards, and set consistent consequences, and practice these skills in session and at home.

FAQ

Common questions

What is SPACE?

SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. It is a parent-based program for children and teens with anxiety or OCD, developed at the Yale Child Study Center. Parents learn to support their child with warmth and confidence while gradually reducing the ways the family adapts to anxiety. It has been found to be as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy delivered to the child for childhood anxiety.

What are family accommodations?

Family accommodations are the ways parents adjust routines to help a child avoid or ease anxiety, such as answering the same reassurance question repeatedly, staying with a child at bedtime, or avoiding places that trigger worry. They come from love and often help in the moment, but over time they can keep anxiety going. SPACE helps parents make changes gradually and supportively.

Does my child need to attend sessions?

No. SPACE works with parents, and many children improve without attending sessions themselves. This can be helpful when a child is unwilling or unable to take part in therapy. Some families combine SPACE with individual therapy for the child.

What is Parent Management Training?

Parent Management Training (PMT) is an evidence-based program that teaches parents specific skills for responding to challenging behavior, including giving clear instructions, using positive attention and rewards, and setting consistent consequences. It is often used for ADHD-related behavior, defiance, and aggression. Parents practice skills in session and apply them at home.

How is this different from parent-focused therapy?

Parent-focused therapy is broader. It centers on the parent as the client, including parenting stress and the challenges of each stage of childhood. SPACE and PMT are structured programs aimed at specific concerns, such as anxiety, OCD, or challenging behavior. Your clinician can help you decide which fits, and some families use both.

How long do these programs take?

The length depends on the program and your child’s needs. Your clinician will talk with you about what to expect during your consultation and will review progress with you regularly.

Do your clinicians prescribe medication?

Our clinicians provide therapy and do not prescribe medication. Some families explore medication with their child’s pediatrician or a psychiatric prescriber, and we can coordinate with them, with your consent.

Can we do these programs online?

Yes. Sessions are available in person at our Chappaqua and Hartsdale offices and by secure video.

What if my child is in crisis?

PPG provides outpatient care and is not an emergency service. If your child is having thoughts of harming themselves, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any time. If your child is in immediate danger, call 911.
